"AI slop" is the derogatory term for low-effort, AI-generated content that adds no genuine value—generic paragraphs, obvious filler, and confident-sounding nonsense. The internet is drowning in it. And the uncomfortable truth is that if you're using AI for content creation without rigorous editorial oversight, you're probably producing some of it yourself.
Here's how to catch it.
The Telltale Signs
1. The Confident Statistic With No Source
"Studies show that 73% of businesses that adopt AI see a 40% increase in productivity." Did you verify this? Can you link to the study? If the AI generated a statistic and you can't find the source, it probably invented it. Delete it or replace it with a verifiable claim.
2. The Generic Transition Paragraph
"In today's rapidly evolving landscape, businesses must adapt to stay competitive." This says nothing. It's the written equivalent of throat-clearing. If a paragraph could apply to literally any topic, it doesn't belong in your content.
3. The Unnecessary List of Obvious Items
AI loves to pad content with lists that tell the reader what they already know. "Benefits of good communication: 1. Better understanding, 2. Fewer misunderstandings, 3. Improved relationships." This is word count, not value.
4. The Hedged-Into-Meaninglessness Statement
"While there are certainly pros and cons to consider, it's important to weigh the various factors before making a decision." This is a sentence designed to avoid saying anything. Cut it.
5. The Suspiciously Comprehensive Summary
AI often ends sections with summaries that restate everything just said. Once is structure. Every section? That's padding.
The Prevention Framework
Before Generation
- Write the core argument yourself before asking AI to draft. If you can't articulate the main point in one sentence, you're not ready to write the post.
- Specify "do not include filler paragraphs" and "every sentence must add information the reader doesn't have" in your prompts.
During Review
- Read every sentence and ask: "Does this sentence contain information the reader came here to learn?" If not, cut it.
- Check every statistic, claim, and recommendation against a real source. If you can't verify it, remove it.
- Read the piece aloud. Slop is easy to spot when you hear it—it sounds like a chatbot trying to fill a word count.
After Editing
- Ask someone else to read it. Fresh eyes catch filler that familiarity blinds you to.
- Compare it to the best manually-written content in your niche. Does yours meet the same standard?
The Quality Standard
The bar for content is not "was this generated by AI?" It's "does this content provide genuine value that the reader couldn't easily find elsewhere?"
AI is a drafting tool. The human editorial layer is what separates useful content from slop. Skip the editorial layer, and you're contributing to the problem.
