This is the hundredth and final post in this content series. It's a manifesto—a statement of beliefs about what AI-augmented professional life can and should look like, tempered by honest acknowledgment of the risks.
I Believe:
1. AI is the Most Powerful Tool for Individual Empowerment Since the Internet
A single person with AI can now do what previously required a team of ten. This levels the playing field between independent professionals and large organisations in a way that was not possible before. The democratisation of capability is real.
2. The Value of Human Judgment Increases as AI Capability Grows
The more AI can execute, the more valuable the human who directs that execution becomes. Strategic thinking, creative vision, ethical reasoning, and relationship building are not diminished by AI—they are elevated.
3. Transparency is Not Optional
Hiding AI usage is both unethical and strategically foolish. Radical transparency about methods builds trust, differentiates you from those who hide, and positions you ahead of regulatory requirements.
4. Data Sovereignty is Worth the Effort
Owning your data, running local models, and choosing tools that respect your autonomy requires more effort than the convenient alternative. That effort is an investment in a professional life you control.
5. Open Source AI Must Be Defended
Open-source AI is the structural safeguard against corporate AI monopoly. Supporting, using, and advocating for open AI is both a practical choice and a civic responsibility.
6. The "Human on the Balcony" is the Right Altitude
Operating at a strategic level—directing systems rather than performing tasks—is the most effective use of human capability in an AI-augmented world. Build the systems. Then ascend.
7. Ethics Cannot Be Automated
AI can assist with ethical analysis, but ethical responsibility rests with humans. Verify facts. Disclose methods. Protect client data. Take accountability. These are not optional.
8. Location Independence is a Lifestyle Design, Not an Escape
Working remotely from different locations is a deliberate design choice with real costs and real benefits. It is not an escape from responsibility—it is a rearrangement of priorities that demands more discipline, not less.
9. Convenience is Not the Highest Value
Freedom, autonomy, and control are worth more than frictionless experience. Choose tools that respect your independence, even when more convenient alternatives exist.
10. The Future is Bright—If We Build It Deliberately
AI's potential for positive impact is enormous. But potential is not destiny. The future we get depends on the choices we make today—about which tools we use, which values we prioritise, and how we deploy AI in our professional lives.
The Invitation
This manifesto is not a set of rules. It is an invitation to build your professional life deliberately, ethically, and optimistically. To use AI as an amplifier of your best human capabilities. To own your tools, your data, and your creative process. To be transparent about your methods and honest about your limitations.
The independent creative who embraces these principles is not just building a career. They're building a model for what AI-augmented professional life can look like at its best.
Welcome to the practice. The balcony is waiting.
